Defining Evangelization Evangelization means "Good News" or "Gospel." To evangelize means to proclaim or to share the "Good News of the Gospel" in a way that draws people to Jesus Christ. "For in its totality, evangelization – over and above the preaching of a message – consists in the implantation of the Church, which does not exist without the driving force which is the sacramental life culminating in the Eucharist." (Evangelii Nuntiandi, 28) Evangelization has both an inward and an outward direction. Inwardly, it calls for our continued receiving of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, our ongoing conversion both individually and as a Church. Evangelization nurtures us, makes us grow and renews us in holiness as God's people. Outwardly, evangelization addresses those who have not heard the Gospel, or having heard it, have stopped practicing their faith, and those who seek the fullness of the faith. It calls us to work for full communion among all who confess Jesus as Lord, but do not yet realize the unity for which Christ prayed.

I have read several books by Philip Yancey's recently and can recommend each of them to all Christians ... but watch out, his writing has a way of challenging your "religion" while strengthening your faith. Yancey is very open in the self-questioning of his beliefs and doesn't hold back on criticism of himself or religion. Through all his writings though, he reveals a loving God that is real and available to all. Here are my recommendations by Philip Yancy:
I'm just starting "Soul Survivor" (Doubleday) in which Yancey tells about 13 people that have affected his faith life most profoundly. If the rest of the book is as good as his first "mentor" (Martin Luther King Jr.) this book will rank among one of his best ... I'll let you know.
Thank you Gerry.
The Philip Yancey Website is very helpful and inspiring.
Reading Room, Conversation Corners, Parish Listings— a great place for seekers to be reintroduced to their faith and find a welcoming parish.
